Third Week of January (Jan 17th - 23rd) 2011

Sunday, January 23rd

We just returned to London from a weekend in Paris. No special occasion. We just hadn't been there for awhile and decided it was time to go. I realized I went to New York more often than Paris in 2010. That's crazy! Paris is only 2 hours 15 minutes by train and New York is more than 7 hours by plane. So, I decided I need to do the opposite this year and go to Paris more frequently than New York. If you're keeping score, it's Paris: 1, New York: 0.

I thought we'd avoid the crowds by visiting Paris in January. But, the city was buzzing with people from all over the world. Many of the hotels and restaurants were fully booked. Finally, I discovered that Fashion Week starts tomorrow and everyone arrived a day or two early for all the parties that take place the weekend before the Show. Despite the crowds, we had a wonderful time. We stayed at the Hotel Rochester (, which isn't far from where we used to live. We had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, La Fontaine de Mars (, which is across the Seine on the Left Bank.

Before we left Paris, we stopped by one of our favorite places, the Berthillon ice cream shop ( This place makes the most wonderful ice cream in the world! Unfortunately, it isn't sold in London. So, we decided to bring some back with us. The shop has so many customers who do this that they sell insulated tote bags that hold six containers of ice cream packed in individual Styrofoam boxes. They put a few ice packs in the tote and the ice cream stays frozen for 5-6 hours, which is plenty of time for us to make it home.
